  • Momentous Day

    Fri 08 Apr 2016

After 44 weeks today the new Countess Gytha Primary School and Nursery was handed over to Somerset County Council by the builder’s bam and the project management team from Futures for Somerset. In a few weeks’ time the staff and children will move in and a new educational adventure will begin.  It has been an amazing achievement by all concerned and done in such a can do spirit. The relationship between bam and the school has been really constructive not only in all the bricks and mortar but also in the way they helped us focus during the build on the educational opportunities for the children.

There are so many folks involved in the build to say big congratulations to the ones below are picked out as representatives. Firstly from the core bam team Graham Holt, Phil Woodmore, Pete Wright, Dave Walker and Laura Paul. From Futures for Somerset Hadleigh Wells and Caroline Barnes and from Somerset County Council Carol Bond and Mike Lewis.
The handover involved a walk round the inside and outside of the school and a formal review of the small list of outstanding issues that will be worked on over the next two weeks. The school was then signed over to Somerset County Council. So the main build is over and during the next few weeks the school will be prepared for the children to move in, for example new classroom furniture. We will also see highways do their work on the West Camel Road outside the school putting in curbing and the crossing, expected to start in early May.

there looking at the new school sign and thinking about the hundreds of people within the community over many years that have brought this new school about.  Thank you to you all we hope to welcome you soon to look round the school and in the years ahead sharing in its success.

See great set of pictures of inside of new school on bam Facebook page here

  • Security and electric training

    Wed 06 Apr 2016

As we fast approach the handover of the school on Friday 8th April the last two days have involved training on the systems that make the school work.  Visits all-round the school meters here, fuse box there and then the pristine boiler house full of clever devices to make the school run efficiently. A main part of the training was looking at the safety systems including the sprinkler and fire alarm, security lighting, camera and alarm systems. The school has self-opening front doors for ease of access and lots of energy saving devices like lights that dim depending on the amount of sunlight coming into the room and turn themselves off if there is no activity in the room. We also have a hearing loop fitted round the hall and will have the same in the two entrances.

Back on the current school site lofts are being emptied, resources reviewed for moving or not to the new school and cardboard boxes filled.  The aim is that the children’s education continues as normal as possible, especially for those building up to take the national tests in May.

  • Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset visit

    Fri 01 Apr 2016
Mrs Annie Maw the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset was accompanied by Mr David Medlock the Vice Lord-Lieutenant on her visit to the school recently.  They were shown round by bam managers, the headteacher and governors. The visit was organised by Mrs Rachel Scully on behalf of the governors and school to see if Mrs Maw could help us with who might formally open the school in the autumn. As we are now close to the end of the build Mrs Maw and Mr Medlock were able to see all that the new school would have to offer to the children and families of the community the school serves. They were both really interested in the design, the inclusive facilities and excited for the future of Countess Gytha Primary.
