Summer Term 2022
Julian Opie - Screen Printing
Lancelot Class completed their art work project on the artist Julian Opie this week. They completed research on the artist, portrait photographs, sketches, paintings, and screen printing all culminating in every child printing their portrait, Opie style, onto a canvas bag which they were able to take home at the end of term.
Year 5 impress at Language Festival
A group of Year 5 girls attended a language festival at Ansford Secondary school this week. They performed. a French fashion show and also demonstrated their confidence when speaking in the french language. A truly memorable morning!
The Greatest Show
Lancelot Class performed their emd of year performance this week. Due to illness, many children had to take on extra roles at the last minute, we couldn’t be more proud of them stepping
uo, to ensure the show went on!
Year 6 enjoy the sun on their residential
Some thought it was a little quieter than usual in school this week, and that was because our wonderful Year 6 were away on their residential camp from Monday-Thursday. They all had a fabulous time with so many activities to enjoy – they managed to squeeze in abseiling, kayaking, paddleboarding, rifle shooting amongst others and pushed themselves to gain confidence and try things that they thought would never be possible for them! Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
What a day we had to celebrate The Queens Platinum Jubilee! The children made crowns, decorated bunting and researched the decades of The Queens reign, all in preparation for our afternoon of celebrations with our community and parents. Please visit class pages to see more fabulous photographs.

Every child was given the opportunity to design and hand paint their own plate this week to help commemorate the Queens Platinum Jubilee.
Designing a Small Garden fit for a Queen
Parents were invited into school this week, to work alongside their children to design a small garden fit for a Queen. These mini gardens will be judged during our celebrations on Friday, and from the photos we are sure it will be a very tricky decision.

Preparations well on the way for The Jubilee
A gentle buzz could be heard throughout the school this week, when some of our schools
preparations commenced for The Platinum Jubilee celebrations next week. Flags were assembled and designs for our own plates were sketched. All the children are looking forward to the events planned next week, culminating in a shared afternoon with parents and the community on Friday afternoon, where a cream tea will be served on the green and each class will have the opportunity to share their work.

Celebrating all that is Somerset
To celebrate Somerset week, we were thrilled to welcome The Wassail Theatre Company. The children watched a very emotive performance where not a single word was spoken. All the children were fully engaged and fixated on the performance. A truly memorable visit.

Easter Celebrations Welcome Parents
St Barnabas hosted our Easter Service this year. We welcomed back parents to join the congregation to celebrate alongside the pupils and staff. Thank you to Julia and Peter for leading the service, which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Winning Designs Receive ‘Eggcellent’ Prizes!
Congratulations to all the winners for their winning innovative designs for the recent Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Easter egg competition.During our final assembly of the term, the winners were announced, with each winner receiving an individual message from a SSAFA member, of why their design was chosen.
Crazy Hair Day - 1st April
What a great effort that families went to, to ensure Crazy Hair Day really was Crazy! The children were encouraged to come to school with the most outrageous hairdo they could think of. They could colour it, curl it, back comb it or even wear a wig, in exchange for a donation of a small Easter egg to help towards the PTFA Easter fundraising fare next week.
County Finals here we come! - 29th March
What a performance from the netball team at Bucklers Mead on the 29th March. We competed in the area finals against six other schools on Tuesday. The team were incredible; winning the first two matches 3-0 and 6-1. We lost against Chard and then went on to win the next two matches 7-1 and 10-0. This meant that we needed to win the final match against Norton to qualify. The team performed heroically and we won 4-3. Amazing work from all of the team: Pippa, Leonie, Georgia, Finley, Will, Henry and Mia. We look forward to the next stage in the competition.

European Inline Skater, Rich Parker, Wows the crowd! - 25th March
In collaboration with ‘Sports for Schools Countess Gytha received a visit this week from Rich Parker, number one ranked halfpipe inline skater in the United Kingdom.
During Rich’s visit he ran a fun fitness circuit with the children and then delivered an inspirational assembly. Rich is a fantastic role model who showed the children that the power of hard work, grit and determination and perseverance can help you achieve your dreams.

We were delighted to make the front page of the Western Gazette this week, alongside a small article inside the paper, sharing with the community our recent events in school.
Road Safety - Bikeability 21st March 2022
This week, whilst the sun was shining, Year 6 children were given a life skill they will never forget. From basic skills to advanced journeys the children completed Level 1 which was getting ready for a journey and then advanced successfully onto Level 2; this teaches children how to grow more confident with each turn of the pedal on the open road. Well done to all participants who took part and passed the Level 2 course.
Comic Relief 2022 (18th March)
All the children adorned the colour red to celebrate Comic Relief this year. During the day, the children were able to take part in a nose and spoon race, construct a habitat for their red noses ( using Lego) participate in a circus skill workshop, which parents also took part in after school and then finally, the children were able to see their bottle rockets launched ( due to poor weather earlier in the week) for Science Week.
Celebrating British Science Week (14th-18thMarch)
British Science Week is an annual celebration of all things science. Here at Countess Gytha Primary School, we took part in a variety of tasks, challenges and competitions during the week.
We were delighted that so many parents could join us for our science afternoon, of fun and experiments. Our aim was to engage the children with their parents and to give them the opportunity to explore and discover what is around them, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in.

March 1st - School Stained Glass Window Unveiled
Parents join in with our Shrove Tuesday Celebrations
It was great to welcome so many parents into school on Tuesday afternoon, to make pancakes with their children. Thank you to all who attended, we hope to see you again soon for future activites!
A Collaborative Art Project with a Local Artist
A selection of KS1 and KS2 children had the opportunity to work alongside Charlotte England ( a local artist) this week, creating their own design for a new stained glass window, for our school hall. The younger children worked with an older pupil to paint their designs using acrylic paints. We are hoping to see the finished window in pride of place when we return from half term.

Xīnnián Kuàilè - Happy Chinese New Year
This week was Chinese New Year, celebrated in style this year at Countess Gytha. Classes wrote wishes on ribbons as well as other Chinese-related activities and received a Chinese Fortune Coin each. With our recent award of the International Dimension, we are keen as ever to continue to push our children’s understanding of tolerance and respect through better knowledge of others around the world.
First Cross Country Event of the Year
For the first time this year, children from Countess Gytha took part in the Yeovil School Games’s Cross Country event, hosted at Yeovil Showground. A staggering 22 children represented the school, with many of these finishing within the top 20 of their race categories. Irrespective of the places, it was delightful to hear the camerarderie which was shared amongst the children and the determination to put Countess Gytha firmly on the sporting map
International Dimension Intermediate Award
We are delighted to announce that Countess Gytha have been awarded The British Council International Dimension Award, for the fantastic work the children and teachers have done towards extending our friendships across national boundaries and recognising the importance of celebrating different cultures from around the world.

Street Surfing proves Popular!
Street surfing is a lot similar to skateboarding, but combines elements of surfing and snowboarding as well. On a Friday, Premier Sports provide an after school enrichment club to enable the children to have taster sessions in this new sporting activity. During the sessions the children will learn about the importance of teamwork, interpersonal skills and of course balance.
They did us Proud!
On Friday, the football team travelled to Strode College for the County Finals. We performed fantastically, working incredibly hard in each game. We won 1 game, drew 2 and lost 1. Henry scored a ‘cracker’ of a goal to win us a match and Finley performed with heart and determination throughout. Unfortunately, we didn’t qualify for the next stage but well done and congratulations to the whole team for finishing as the 6th best team in Somerset.
We're through to the County Finals!
On Thursday this week, the football team travelled to Yeovil to take part in the Small School Area Finals. Amazingly, the team won the tournament with four wins out of five games. Goals scored by Henry, Oscar, Joseph and Bowen meant that we finished top and now qualify for the County Finals. Well done to the team.
Newly appointed Reading Ambassadors and Reading Buddies enjoy first sessions with KS1
Being a Reading Ambassador and Buddy is all about reading for pleasure and sharing this enjoyment of reading with others. This week, our Ambassadors and Buddies took their first steps to inspire our younger generation, to have a love of reading. They supported Merlin and Pendragon children, to read their own reading books followed by them sharing a book from the library that they had chosen together. The Ambassadors will have a weekly timetable of children to read with regularly and very much look forward to inspiring readers this year.
New books arrive to inspire readers
A huge thank-you to all who came and purchased a book at our Book Fair, at the end of Autumn Term. From the commission gained, we received our free books this week. The school librarians have delivered 10 books to each class, to add to their own class library area.
Music Appreciation in Excalibur Class
Following on from their successful Mamma Mia rendition, Excalibur were thrilled to be emerged in the sound of Reggae on Friday afternoon. The children looked at where reggae originated and how the music stye of ABBA and Bob Marley were different.The lyrics from Three Little Birds were discussed and how the lyrics are relevant to today.

Lancelot Class perform a Christmas Classic
As part of their Computing curriculum, Lancelot Class enjoyed using the green screen to record their videos. They added background, moving screensavers, graphics and edited the finished video to share with everyone and also to send to our link school to enjoy in Spain!
Christmas Choir at Village Cafe
Countess Gytha Choir we’re invited to sing at The Queen Camel Village Cafe. They shared traditional carols and modern classics to an enthusiastic audience and were thrilled to be able to perform to the local community.

The children at CGPS and Preschool were amazed to see a special visitor touch down this week!
Mamma Mia performed by Excalibur
Excalibur’s music lesson this week ended with an Abba performance. They listened with attention to detail and recalled sounds with increasing aural memory. Clearly the children enjoyed their lessons and are looking forward to the next Abba track to sing!
Merlin pupils help decorate tree
The children in Merlin Class, decorated baubles this week to add to the schools Christmas tree. Every class will eventually place a bauble on the tree, to add their own individual
style.
Cinderella arrives at Countess Gytha
On Tuesday, the school were lucky enough to receive a wonderful pantomime performance of Cinderella from M&M productions. The enjoyment on the children’s faces was clear to see and it really brought the festive spirit to our class.
A pupil remarked, “The songs were great and it was funny when the teachers were dancing.”
Christingle Celebration November 2021
Please enjoy our Christingle celebration which we held at St Barnabas Church today. Sadly, neither the church speakers nor projector were working so we had to muddle through but it was a lovely service all the same! As we were having to use more staff to assist with the technology, the video quality isn't the greatest but I hope you agree that the photos do justice to what was a lovely celebration together.
Heart Surgeons of the Future
As part of their science unit about human biology our Year 5 and 6 pupils have had the amazing opportunity to dissect a pig’s heart, something which pupils don't usually do until secondary school. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience (although it was a bit gruesome at times) and learnt about the four chambers of the heart and the different blood vessels that lead to and from the heart. Pupils noticed a big difference between the left and the right side of the heart and were able to cut the heart open to see the inside more clearly.
There are definitely some budding physiologists at Countess Gytha Primary School, we look forward seeing them in the future!

Countess Gytha Welcome a Surprise Visitor
A surprise visitor was greeted by a filled playground of cheering and delighted children today. Pudsey was warmly welcomed by all ( including the staff) and enjoyed sharing high fives and finding output what the children had been doing for Children in Need. BBC Somerset Radio also interviewed Mr Gordon and Mrs Sherry, along with some children to find out why Children in Need is important to them.

Mr David Warburton MP visit Countess Gytha
RNAS Yeovilton Remembrance Service
On Thursday 11th November, Countess Gytha's Service Children were invited to attend the Remembrance Service at St Bart's Church in Yeovilton. The children were able to take part in the service and participated in the two minutes silence at 11am, alongside Sailors and Soldiers at the Royal Naval Cemetery. When we returned to school, the children continued their act of Remembrance by planting poppies in our memorial.
We Shall Remember Them
Throughout the week, the whole school took time during their school day to remember the importance of why we celebrate Remembrance Day. On Thursday, Mr Gordon led the assembly accompanied by Henry who read In Flanders Fields and Mia, who wrote her own tribute to all fallen soldiers.
Year 5 and 6 enjoy Cool Aeronautics Event
On Wednesday 10th November, Countess Gytha were part of a Cool Aeronautics event, where over 15 local primary schools took part. The day was overseen by Leonardos in Yeovil and the children had to plan and design a life raft alongside a wind turbine. This day gave the children the opportunity to be involved within the aerospace engineering process and to work alongside their peers, being guided by a mentor from Leonardos.

Lancelot visit Nothe Fort in Weymouth
Lancelot class had a fantastic, enjoyable school trip to Nothe Fort this week. The children were transported back to the war and experienced life as an evacuee. Please visit the class page to enjoy more photos of this memorable day.
British Legion Poppy Appeal
Year 5 and Year 6 children have been selling poppies to parents and visitors this week, on behalf of The British Legion. These will be continued to be sold everyday after school until Wednesday 10th November.
Our First Sporting Tournament of the Year
A netball tournament was held at Westfield School, Yeovil, on Thursday this week. Selected children from Lancelot and Excalibur took part in the event and showed great determination and commitment throughout. Out of the six matches played, Countess Gytha lost 2, drew 2 and won 2 of their matches. Well done team, you showed great team spirit and grew in confidence throughout each match.
Celebrating Harvest at St Barnabas’
The whole school was able to celebrate Harvest at The Church of St Barnabas this week. Harvest songs, poems and prayers were shared by the children and Mr Gordon and Julia told us the importance of Harvest and The Lord’s Larder ( where all of our donated food will be shared). Thank you for everyone who donated so generously to The Lord’s Larder.
Travelling Back to The 1940s
Lancelot Class travelled back to WW 2 this week. Smiling evacuees were plentiful and they were soon in the spirit of the day. Greeting adults with Sir and Ma’am and showing respect by standing up when they entered the room was something they were able to maintain throughout the day. What wonderful polite evacuee children we have at Countess Gytha!

Castle Cary Lantern Parade
More than 40 children were able to attend the lantern parade on Saturday evening. The children were accompanied by their parents and staff along the parade and when finished they were able to enjoy the colour and marvel of the carnival itself.
Enjoying our Environment
Excalibur have been enjoying spending time in our wonderful outside environment. They are doing a fantastic job in the allotment area, clearing weeds,digging and planting ready for Spring.
Fun-Filled Friday
This Friday saw the whole school participate in two fun-filled events. In the morning, the Golden Mile was enjoyed by all. It was beneficial towards not only our physical health but also our mental health. At the end of the school day, the children paraded their beautiful lanterns that they had started to make during #Hello Yellow Day. We are hoping that many of the children will take these lanterns to the Castle Cary Lantern and Carnival Parade on Saturday.. Fingers crossed the weather stays dry!

On Friday, the whole school dressed in yellow to raise awareness of the importance of mental health. Children and staff took part in assemblies and activities throughout the day, to ensure that we support one another and those in our community, whenever it is needed.

A Successful Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you to all who attended the book fair this week.We were overwhelmed by the amount of children and parents that came to view and purchase their books. At present we are hoping that the commission we receive, through the selling of the books, will exceed £300, which will be used to purchase new books for each class. Thank you to all who has made this a huge success this year.

Summer Reading Award
This week in our celebration assembly, Rupert, Lucy, Willem and Albert received their certificates and medals received from Wincanton Library, following their successful participation in the Summer Reading Challenge.
European Day of Languages

Language Ambassadors
At Countess Gytha Primary School we have Language Ambassadors who promote the school’s positive ethos in language learning.
Congratulations to our new Language Ambassadors for this year. These children have been chosen to represent our school as great role models, promoting the importance of language and the diverse world we live in.
The children will play an important role in the organisation of Language Days in our school and closely work with our Languages teachers to promote the importance of learning languages in primary schools.

Countess Gytha Enjoy a Visit from Pete the Poet
This week, Pete shared stories from around the world embracing the power of creativity.
The KS2 workshops he delivered to the children focused on the contributions of key figures in the race equality / pro diversity movements around the world such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela .
All of the sessions contained opportunities to learn greetings in other languages and an optimistic view of an individual’s ability to make the world a better place. All of the children that took part certainly left with huge smiles of enjoyment on their faces!
