Pancake Day arrives a day early in Lancelot
Children enjoyed making and cooking their very own pancake this week. With the choice of lemon and sugar for toppings they certainly went down a treat!
The Star in Lancelot class this week is Barnaby, for outstanding effort in maths – neat, accurate and hardworking – high praise indeed, Barnaby! Mr. Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Tommy for his resilience in completing tasks across the week, including writing a fantastic pen-pal letter to a local school as part of next week’s World Book Day activities – a great end to the week, Tommy!
This week, we have been writing letters to our Preston Primary pen pals. The letters are focussed on World Book Day. We have recommended genres, authors and books to them and hope to read their return letters next week. Here is an example from Sam.
It was wonderful to see so many of our young people in their Scouting or Guiding movement uniforms, marking World Thinking Day on Monday. The day is an initiative led by the Guiding movement for groups across the world to think about each other, the groups that they are a part of and any important topical issues.
On Monday, we were visited by Wessex Water who delivered a great workshop on Climate Change and Water. We recapped the water cycle, discussed the meaning of climate, found out how much water a human use per day and recommended solutions to the water challenges the UK will face in the future.
Our History topic this term has shown a real interest in The Stone Age. We were able to show our artistic cross curricula talents when exploring the key features of Cave Art from the Stone Age and discovering how and why these cave paintings were created. We were also able to use a selection of fresh vegetables to make our own dyes to create our own individual tie dye square.
Lancelot were thrilled to have another opportunity to listen to a published author this week. Lucy Strange is a children’s author that has written many books inspired by folklore and fairytales. The children discovered that she loves to combine historical settings with touches of magic and fantasy to create worlds i which anything could happen…
We were so taken with her ideas and the way she writes that we have ordered some of her books for our ever-growing bookshelf!
The Star in Lancelot class this week is Alfie W, for planning, writing and presenting an excellent information Powerpoint on The Stone Age- brilliant effort, Alfie! Mr. Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Imogen this week, for showing an amazing effort in her maths assessments this week, particularly Paper 3 – a perfect, score! Well done, Imogen!
In our assembly this week, we were delighted to be visited by Kate French, a gold-winning Modern Pentathlete, competing in the Rio, Tokyo and Paris games! Children listened intently to her personal journey and were able to ask plenty of questions about what it takes to be the best at something in the world! Some were even lucky enough to hold her gold winning medal from Tokyo!
Wednesday heralded in the Lunar New Year, celebrated across the world, but is particularly associated with China. Children were greeted into school by our dazzling dragon! Lancelot class completed a comprehension on the story of the Chinese calendar and some even completed a chopstick challenge!

Mr. Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Sam, for showing a willingness to come into class with a smile on his face and a hardworking attitude – brilliant to hear, Sam!
As a result of today's school closure due to the flooding, we have prepared some resources for the children to complete at home.
English - there is a comprehension for you to complete and a short grammar activity.
Maths - Year 5 and Year 6 have separate arithmetic questions and a negative numbers challenge. Click on the website: https://mathsbot.com/primary/ks2 and complete an arithmetic paper.
History - there is a Stone Age research task.

The Star in Lancelot class this week is Jenson, for an outstanding extended report on Olympic athletes past and present - brilliant effort, Jenson! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Noah, for demonstrating excellent effort in his maths lessons, focusing particularly well on his algebra work – brilliant to hear, Noah!
For those with good memories, you may remember that this time last year, we were celebrating our friendship tree with messages from our partner schools around the world. We are delighted to say that a year later, the school has received the British Council’s highest award for its language, cultural and international offer! Mrs Sherry was thrilled to receive the award on the school’s behalf in London this week.

The Star in Lancelot class this week is Isabelle, for an excellent diary entry as Mr Charles using semi-colons and colons confidently challenging herself in every lesson– brilliant effort, Isabelle! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Jack, for demonstrating excellent effort in all lessons, particularly history with an outstanding report of Skara Brae!
This term sees Lancelot Class enjoying the company of Mr Male and his collection of drums and percussion instruments! We will be enjoying listening to Samba beats and developing and playing our own Samba rhythms.
Lancelot – The Star in Lancelot class this week is Lucy, for challenging herself in every lesson in maths and always being helpful in and around the classroom.Well done Lucy. Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Isabelle, for being a supportive shoulder partner and an excellent team member when completing her bow and arrow advert task. Superb effort Isabelle.
Bible readings, poems and classic and modern Christmas songs were enjoyed by a full house in St Barnabas church on Wednesday evening. It was great to see so many parents be able to enjoy us for the evening and the children certainly did themselves proud.
We are pleased to announce that this years winning Christmas card design for The Preston Primary Academy Trust goes to Surf from Lancelot Class. Her winning design shows the different visitors to the stable throughout The Christmas period. Not only did she win this competition but her design was also put forward in the Ansford Christmas card competition which she also won! Huge congratulations To Surf we are all very proud of your efforts.
Lancelot Class enjoyed preparing, cooking and eating their own Christmas lunch this week. With many children peeling and chopping for the first time, parents should be delighted with the extra help on offer this Christmastime! We were delighted to host two special guests to our celebrations this year alongside Mr Gordon.
Lancelot – The Star in Lancelot class this week is Imogen, for a set of outstanding results this week, in particular her maths, achieving over 100 marks (out of a possible 110) – an incredible achievement! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Cooper, for exceptional progress in his assessments, especially within his reading paper – keep up the brilliant work, Cooper!
The whole school attended the annual Christingle service this week at St Barnabas. Lancelot Class accompanied the Foundation stage children and Preschool children safely to the church, before lighting their very own Christingle which they all made earlier in the week with the help of friends from the church. Children from Lancelot explained the meaning of Advent and the importance of the Advent wreath.
Children were thrilled to hear the hum of the rotor blades of a helicopter overhead on Tuesday. Little did they know that this helicopter had precious cargo in the guise of Father. Christmas and one of his elves. We handed him our recently written letters before some children were lucky enough to share their hopes for Christmas with the bearded
, red coated man!

Somerset Sustainable Futures event launch
The Somerset Sustainable Futures event was held at Taunton Rugby Club on Tuesday this week. Selected member from the Eco and School Council from Countess Gytha Primary School attended the launch. The event consisted of interactive green careers events, youth voice activities and a fantastic young keynote speaker. The children gained a huge amount from the sessions and confidently shared their own ideas of their roles in the future of how they could make a difference to the future of Somerset's sustainability and the impact of Climate Change on the world we all live in.
Pudsey arrived on Tuesday afternoon to say thank you to Countess Gytha pupils for raising an amazing £220 in aid of Children in Need this year. Pudsey was in great spirits as he visited each class and the School Council. .
The children couldn’t believe that this amazing national icon visited their school. What a great cause!

A Film showing determination, social bias and dreams that can come true.
What a treat for the whole school this week. We were able to all attend a screening at Yeovil Cineworld, thanks to the Into film festival. Lancelot along with Excalibur and year 3 watched a documentary film entitled The Eagle Huntress.
Aisholpan is a 13-year-old girl from a remote Mongolian tribe, who dreams of becoming an eagle hunter - just like her father and her grandfather before him. The ancient tradition stretches back over 1,000 years, but Aisholpan's plans are almost dashed at the outset by the male-dominated eagle hunting community, who strongly disapprove of girls taking part, arguing they should stay at home to milk the cows and make the tea. Meanwhile, Aisholpan and her determined father - who passionately believes girls can do anything that boys can - set out to prove she can become Mongolia's first eagle huntress.

The Star in Lancelot class this week is Alex F, for an outstanding opening to his adventure story using cohesion, creating atmosphere as well as using figurative language -– great to hear, Alex! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Alfie W for showing a good attitude in lessons; discussing books with enthusiasm and always coming into school with a smile - keep it up, Alfie!
Monday saw Year 6 taking the lead in our whole school Remembrance service.it was lovely to see parents stand alongside the pupils too. Readings and poems were shared before a laying of a wreath of poppies and cornflowers at the base of the flag pole.
Topping off a brilliant week at Countess Gytha, children came dressed in their finest pyjamas accompanied by their teddies too! It was a wonderful way to mark Children in Need 2024 and word on the street is that we will be receiving a special
visitor in the coming weeks to say a great big thank you for the staggering £220, raised on the day.
Science Investigation is blooming marvellous!
In our science lesson this week we have started to learn about transpiration and how this takes place in flowering and non flowering plants. We have started a practical investigation and will monitor and observe the results daily.

We we’re delighted to start off this half term, with a day of Science and Art and DT. Our artistic talents were put to the test by Darryl with a project of upgrading our welcome sign for the school foyer. Each member of the class played a vital role in the 3D masterpiece which now hangs proudly for all to enjoy.
The Star in Lancelot class this week is Alfie C, for his fantastic letter as a royal advisor to Prince Paris of ancient Greece, to attempt to choose the right Goddess – great work, Alfie! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Albie for his determined attitude to return to school ready to learn with lots of resilience and determination – keep it up, Albie!
Preparations for Remembrance Day
Members of The School Council took delivery of our Remembrance Day Poppy appeal merchandise this week. Poppies etc will be on sale from week commencing 4th November at the start and end of the school day.
First Aider completes vital workshop
Congratulations to Georgia, who has recently completed a British Heart Foundation lifesaver course where she was taught to perform CPR safely. Well done Georgia!
French Fun with Board Games
Finishing off our French unit, the children were able to draw on their knowledge from this terms unit and take part in a French board game. It was lovely to see and hear how much knowledge the children had gained throughout the 7 weeks.
On Tuesday, the children explored the school habitat and we tried to find different plants and animals and identified them using an ID sheet. Afterwards, we classified them into groups to create a field guide.
Many children from Lancelot took part in the annual Castle Cary nighttime carnival on Saturday night. With all the finishing touches completed during the week, the costumes were worn with pride much to the delight of the ever growing crowds, even a rain shower couldn’t dampen their spirits!

Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Frayer, for demonstrating a positive attitude in booster; an excellent advert for her robot dog – showing great teamwork!
The Tudors and The Monarchy - Our History Topic
Lancelot have been studying Tudors and the Monarchy. We have looked at what daily life was like and this week we evaluated the portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and compared them with the portraits of King Henry VIII.
Harvest
Tuesday saw our annual Harvest Festival take place in the school hall this year due to the adverse weather conditions! Lancelot shared (with the parents, church visitors and their peers) the meaning of Harvest. Mr Gordon and Mr Gallagher took a active role in the presentation when asked for brave volunteers - little did they know it involved a jam doughnut,
Thursday saw the children listen to and perform their own poems. Their ideas were based on the poem by Kate Wakeling - Paean (eleven uses for a garden peas).
Four of our students in Lancelot class visited Thornford Primary today for an Aim High Writing Day. This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to gain skills and knowledge in writing creatively. The day was delivered by Clive Pig - a published author and poet who inspired the children by retelling traditional stories from around the world. These tales then inspired the children to create and write their own pieces of text and poems.
The Star in Lancelot class this week is Georgia, for being a helpful, supportive and hardworking shoulder-partner. In addition to this, the presentation of work is improving due to lots of hard effort on her part - great to hear, Georgia! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Aurelia, for demonstrating that she can finish all of her work in the lesson to a high standard. Additionally, Aurelia showed brilliant teamwork during the boccia tournament too!
This week saw the children embrace all that was European Day of Languages! Our country studied this year was ITALY 🇮🇹 - children composed fact files, listened to traditional Italian music whilst watching scenic views taken from Italy itself. They made their own pizzas and had the opportunity to taste some traditional dishes whilst learning simple phrases from the country.
As part of their PSHE lesson this week Lancelot along with Excalibur were delighted to be joined by Lord Knight of Weymouth, guiding the classes on a virtual tour of the House of Lords. The children asked some brilliant questions about the history and then the current work of the chamber, as well as what the future for the House of Lords might look like.
The Star in Lancelot class this week is Surf, for coming into school with a smile; for contributing confidently to class discussions and amazing facts about the Tudors – great to hear, Surf! Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Alex R, for the excellent fraction work all week. His maths has been accurate and wonderfully presented – keep it up, Alex!
Week 3
Wow - what a great Wednesday the class enjoyed. We were all inspired to meet Katherine Rundell on Zoom. She detailed her inspirations for her brilliant children's books The Explorer, Rooftoppers and Impossible Creatures, she answered questions about her influences and ideas and told us about how she ate a tarantula as research for one of her books. It was fascinating and we now have a battle for each of her books in the class library.

Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to Jenson, who has shown great understanding of a character’s viewpoint and shows wonderful knowledge of emotions and feelings – superb work, Jenson!

Mr Gallagher’s Worker of the Week is awarded to James, who created an outstanding extended write about how to be a brilliant learner in Lancelot – follow your own rules James and you won’t go far wrong
The children enjoyed being detectives during their Topic lesson this week! By carefully looking at the various portraits of Henry Viii, they had to decide for themselves what type of person the portraits portrayed about him at that time.
Welcome back to the Autumn Term. It has been great to start this year together in a really positive manner. The children have returned to school with a mature and hardworking attitude and are already learning new routines. In Lancelot class, we have an incredible team with lots of experience. We have the amazing Mrs Sherry (HLTA) with us again who you will know. We are really looking forward to having a hugely successful year full of learning, hard-work and laughter.
