We are a friendly preschool located in the beautiful, rural village of Queen Camel in Somerset. Our preschool was established in Queen Camel near Yeovil in 1982 and now operates from purpose-built facilities as part of the village primary school.
We provide a wide range of play activities, educational & fun toys, plenty of art and creative work, as well as music, story time and free flow to outside play, from 09.00am - 3.30pm each day.
We encourage parents to contribute a piece of fruit for the sessions their children attend for fruit snack time. Milk and water are provided by the preschool. Parents need to provide a lunch-box for any lunch sessions or order hot meals via ParentPay.
The day is split into three sessions, Monday to Friday, term time only:
Parents can choose what sessions they would like their child to attend and they can stay all day if they would like them to!
We have children attend our preschool that live in Queen Camel and the surrounding villages and towns of West Camel, Weston Bampfylde, Sparkford, North Cadbury, South Cadbury, Marston Magna, Mudford and Yeovil.
Wendy Flagg is our preschool manager.

All the staff at Countess Gytha Preschool understand that working in partnership with parents to support the needs of the children is an important factor in linking the children’s experience at our preschool with the care they receive at other settings and at home.
Every child is appointed a key worker who is responsible for recording their development in the seven areas of the EYFS, as well as being a familiar face to help your child feel confident in the preschool environment. The more information you can share with your child’s key worker when you drop your child off at the preschool the better – hearing about your child’s successes, achievements and challenges during their non-preschool time helps us to focus their day around activities that they will be excited to share with you at home time. Your key worker is also your main point of contact for feedback and any issues you would like to raise.
Our aim is to provide a range of fun activities that are based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum which encompasses seven different areas of learning:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
Every term our staff spend time carefully planning activities which will provide a stimulating and challenging environment for children of all ages and abilities. As well as having free time to play and choose their own toys children are also encouraged to participate in structured adult-led activities.
Our outside area features an all-weather surface as well as sand and water play, bikes, scooters and cars, building with blocks, slides and lots of other fun activities and resources.
We constantly vary the activities in the main classroom so that as as part of covering the seven areas of learning we provide painting, cooking, access to IT equipment, music and story based activities, and visitors from the local community come in to talk about what they do. We also go on trips out into the village to explore our surroundings.
Every child at Countess Gytha Preschool has their own Key Worker who works closely with them to support their learning and record their developmental progress. You will be invited to regular meetings with your child’s Key Worker to discuss their progress and find out more about their achievements at preschool.
As your child grows, it is important that they are encouraged to build their independence and at Countess Gytha Preschool we know how important it is to provide a safe and supportive environment in which to do this. Children have access to their own drink at any time of the day and whilst we have nappy-changing facilities we also help children to build their independent toilet skills once they are ready.
