    Spring Term

    Week 9

Today Lancelot Class took part in an exciting live science lesson as part of British Science Week. The session explored the fascinating world of light and space through a fun, Horrible Science–inspired investigation. Pupils learned that light travels in straight lines, how we see objects when light reflects into our eyes, and why it is important never to look directly at the Sun. They also explored the movements of the Sun, Earth and Moon, discovering how Earth’s rotation causes day and night. The lesson even included a special appearance from astronaut Tim Peake, who shared fascinating facts about space and the Moon.

We also designed fantastic posters, that have entered the British Science Week competition - the theme was Future Childhoods - some of which are attached here:

    Week 8

    World Book Day Week

This week, James Fox is the first of five author virtual visits. James spoke to us about his latest book, Boy vs Reality, a funny, sensitive and moving story that explores everyday family life. He shared his inspirations, his love of reading, and how his stories tackle important issues – such as sharing children’s content online – in a thoughtful, uplifting way. His powerful message about being present and enjoying life’s everyday moments truly resonated with our pupils.

Our second author this week was Liz Pichon who spoke to us about her Tom Gates series. It was fascinating to learn about her process and the success of the series. We also created some Tom Gates inspired drawings with the help of Liz. Here are some for you to look at:

Our third author was William Yamagouci Dobson - the fantastic author of Kamizen. He spoke to us about how he created the worlds in which his characters explore, what his writing process is and helped us to design our own Yokai (a diverse class of supernatural monsters, spirits, demons, and ghosts in Japanese folklore).

Our fourth author this week was Jamie Gregory, the author of the fantastic graphic novel, Bone Head. We had an exclusive first look at this highly illustrated fiction series that’s destined to top everyone’s wishlist and had a live demonstration of how to draw Bone Head aka Demise. Here are some of our drawings:

Lancelot enjoyed an exciting afternoon Zoom visit with author Emily Hourican, our fifth author of the week as part of our celebrations for World Book Day. During the session, we became detectives as we worked together to solve the mystery of the missing rainbow cake.

Emily also introduced us to her new book, Murder at the Ivy Hotel, and explained the important ingredients of a good mystery: motive, means and opportunity. The class asked thoughtful questions and loved hearing about how she creates her stories.

It was a fun and inspiring way to finish another fantastic day celebrating books and reading.

In Geography this week, our class has been developing their map-reading skills using official Ordnance Survey (OS) maps. We explored areas including the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, Dartmoor and Snowdonia.

Using four-figure and six-figure grid references, pupils located campsites, lakes, mountain peaks, youth hostels and train stations. They began to understand how contour lines, symbols and map keys help us interpret landscapes.

It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence as they navigate maps like real explorers, developing valuable geographical skills along the way.

    Bikeability Success for  Year 6

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in the Bikeability training course, learning important skills to help them cycle safely and confidently on the road. Over several sessions, the children developed their knowledge of road safety, practised signalling and positioning, and learned how to navigate junctions and traffic safely.

The instructors were very impressed with the pupils’ enthusiasm, focus and determination. The course not only helped build cycling skills but also encouraged independence and confidence when travelling around the local area.

Well done to all of our Year 6 cyclists for completing the course so successfully, and thank you to the Bikeability instructors for their expert guidance and support. We hope many of our pupils will continue to enjoy cycling safely for years to come.

Christmas Market – Children Raising Money for Charity

Our class school council members have been working independently to plan and run a Christmas Market in order to raise money for charity. This enterprise project has given the children the opportunity to develop creativity, responsibility, and teamwork while supporting an important cause.

The children have designed and made a range of festive items to sell, including handmade decorations, gifts, and small Christmas treats. From initial ideas through to creating products and setting prices, pupils have been closely involved in every stage of the process.

On the day of the Christmas Market, the children will take an active role in organising stalls, selling their items, and managing money responsibly. This real-life experience helps them develop confidence, communication skills, and an understanding of how fundraising can make a positive difference to others.

All proceeds from the market will be donated to charity, reinforcing the importance of kindness, generosity, and helping those in need. We are very proud of the children’s enthusiasm, independence, and commitment to making their Christmas Market a success.

Thank you to families and visitors for supporting the children and their fundraising efforts.

    Thales Workshop

This week, we took part in an exciting Thales workshop that brought creativity, engineering, and teamwork to life! The class was split into two teams – Tiny Thales and Extraordinary Engineers – and given the challenge of designing, building, and presenting a practical object. Ideas ranged from bikes and scooters to wheelie bins, allowing the children to think imaginatively while solving real engineering problems.

Throughout the afternoon, the children showed fantastic focus and collaboration. Each team worked hard to share ideas, plan their designs, and construct their models with the guidance of four Thales engineers and apprentices who supported them every step of the way. Tiny Thales impressed with their innovative bike design, showing excellent thought and creativity, while Extraordinary Engineers took the win with their scooter. Their design was particularly practical because it could fold up, making it easy to store and carry.

The workshop was not just about competition – it was about learning, experimenting, and supporting each other. The children demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and excellent communication skills. It was a fantastic afternoon, full of creativity, problem-solving, and fun, and we are incredibly proud of all the participants.

    Evacuees for an Afternoon

As part of our history learning, the children took part in an immersive afternoon where they became World War Two evacuees. Our learning objective was to understand the range of experiences children had during evacuation and to explore emotions and perspectives through drama and discussion. Pupils were given evacuee identities and took part in a lively ‘stand up, pair up’ activity, moving around the room to meet other evacuees and share their stories in character. There were farmers, city children, and even a few nervous evacuees missing their families! This drama activity helped everyone imagine what it might have felt like to leave home and start a new life in the countryside. To finish the session, the children wrote postcards home, describing their characters’ feelings and experiences. It was a powerful and memorable way to bring history to life — full of empathy, imagination, and fantastic storytelling.
